Nanowrimo 2003

Steve Says:

Incredibly enough, I managed to stumble over the 50,000 word mark for the National Novel Writing Month 2002 contest on the very last day. I really had to turn on the writing in the last week because I was sick with the flu during the first week of November. During the last four days I wrote 20,000 words--averaging 5,000 a day.

So what did I learn? I learned that

  • You can't write a novel (that's any good) in a month
  • I don't want to be a novelist
  • I stink at writing

Still, this exercise has turned out to be very fruitful because ever since I was in high school, in the back of my mind I always felt that I could be a writer. But now I know that I don't have any desire to become a novelist, so I won't waste anymore time thinking about that. Instead, I'll expend my energy pursuing my dream of becoming a professional football player. I'm kidding.

Pondering

As for Losertown, my so-called "novel", it will probably remained buried for eternity. The last 9,000 words are mostly padding simply to cross the 50,000 mark. It's also a total mess. I wrote it so that the chapters do not follow a linear timeline, and it ended up being a confusing mess because I couldn't keep the timeline straight in my head.

I may fix it up and eventually post it as an e-book. I also may post a sample chapter so you can see how bad a writer I am. Oh, in one of those chapters that served as padding, one of the characters writes a song for his girlfriend, so I may record that and post it.
