Poor Man's Fried Rice

Poor Man's Fried Rice

The band occasionally veers off its normal routine of buying pre-packaged foods, and so offers up a little recipe known as "Poor Man's Fried Rice." It's really cheap and easy to make and, along with macaroni and cheese, should be a staple with every college student in the country.

First, you need about a pint of cooked white rice (cold). That's about a cup of uncooked rice. Before you boil it, be sure to wash it to get rid of that grime. Don't worry, you won't be missing the tiny amount of added vitamins that you're washing down the drain. If you have a rice cooker then it makes it easy to cook, otherwise you have to watch it and turn off the heat just about when the last bit of water bubbles up through the rice. Don't add anything to it--just cold water--about a quarter inch above the rice.

Make scrambled eggs out of your one large egg and set it aside.

Heat up the oil in a large frying pan. Make it nice and hot, but don't start a fire! Add the onions, salt, sugar, and msg. Stir fry until the onions start to become translucent.

Ingredients

2 tablespoons oil
1 pint cooked white rice (cold)
1 large egg
1/4 cup chopped onion
1/3 teaspoon salt
1/3 teaspoon sugar
1/3 teaspoon msg
1 tablespoon soy sauce
Dash of black pepper

Add the rice and fry for around three minutes. Cover for about a minute. Add the soy sauce and pepper. Stir for about a minute. Add the egg that you previously set aside and stir. And there you have it! Poor Man's Fried Rice!

The cooking time will vary depending on a lot of things--your mileage may vary. And you can adjust the salt and soy sauce to suit your tastes. But you can get a lot out of just cooking with salt, sugar, msg, and pepper.
